Arthur J. Ball, Jr., 94, of Springfield, Ohio passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 29, 2016. Born to Arthur J. Ball, Sr. and Martha Delaney on November 13, 1921 in Springfield, Ohio. Arthur was the eldest of four children. Preceding him in death are his parents, brother John and sister Grace.
Arthur was baptized at an early age and attended the Second Baptist Church and Mount Zion Baptist Church in Springfield. Arthur attended the Fulton School, Keifer Junior High and graduated from South High School in 1940. He attended trade school after graduation where he learned welding. His instructor recommended he join the Navy where he was drafted during World War II in 1942 and became a member of the Seabees. During his time in the Navy he was promoted to Chief Petty Officer. He traveled to a number of foreign lands and received honorable discharge from the Navy in 1946.
After the Navy, Arthur married Betty White; while they resided in Springfield and had two children, Brian and Arlen. Soon after moving to Brooklyn, New York their daughter Donna was born.
Employed by the NYC Transit Authority for 25 years, Arthur worked as a surface bus operator until his retirement in 1975. In 1975, Arthur relocated back to Springfield to be closer to his siblings and extended family. Arthur enjoyed spending time with his brother, John, sister, Marjorie and his early morning breakfast meeting with other retirees at Rally's.
Arthur enjoyed reading, watching PBS, working on his cars and stopping by to visit friends and family. Arthur, affectionately called "Bud" by his sister Marjorie, visited her almost daily through the years with a consistent visit to his niece and nephew and his family directly across the street. He would always head home before it became to dark to drive home.
Arthur continued his membership to the Second Baptist Church and served as a Deacon well over 10 years. Arthur thoroughly enjoyed his service at Second Baptist and looked forward to each Sunday.
Arthur is survived by his children, Brian J. (Shirley)Ball, Sr., Arlen Ball and Donna Ball; granddaughter, Tatanisha (James) Ball-Osbourne; grandsons, Brian J. Ball, Jr and Joshua C. Ball; great grandson, Jonathon Osbourne; great granddaughter, Samaya Osbourne; his loving sister and best friend, Marjorie Ball and a wealth of nieces, nephews and friends.
