Son of Jonathan and Edith (Smith) Herrett, Vernon graduated from Everett High School. He married Anna L. Heiden on September 26, 1931 in Pierce County, Washington. He owned and operated the Madrona Restaurant in Seattle for many years, then owned and operated the Tumwater Cafe in Leavenworth from 1949 until he retired in 1966. He was instrumental in the remodeling of the town with a Bavarian village theme.

He was survived by his wife Anna; his children, Jack Herrett in Alameda, California, Mrs. Ivan (Verna) Franzen of Everett and Mrs. Forrest (Betty) Bryant of Tacoma; and a sister, Mrs. Lucille Wilson of Marysville.
