Musician, Songwriter, Producer. A keyboardist with the 1970s British Funk and Disco group "Heatwave", he went on to an immensely successful association with producer Quincy Jones, which included the penning of Michael Jackson's hit "Thriller" (1982), featured on the smash album of the same title. Born Rodney Lynn Temperton, he played in his first band, initially as a drummer during his high school years. In 1975, he joined "Heatwave" and experienced much commercial success as the band yielded three platinum singles, "Boogie Nights" (1977), "Always and Forever" (1978) and "Groove Line" (1978), all written by Temperton. His songwriting caught the attention of Quincy Jones in 1978, who enlisted him to help write scores for Michael Jackson's album "Off the Wall" (1979). The results were the singles "Off the Wall", "Rock With You" and "Burn this Disco Out". Additionally on the "Thriller" album, he penned the songs "Lady In My Life" and "Baby Be Mine". His accomplishments were furthered when he wrote the hits " Something Special", "Razzamatazz", for Patti Austin from Quincy Jones' album "The Dude" (1981), "Give Me the Night" (1980), for George Benson, "Baby, Come to Me" (1981), for James Ingram and Patti Austin and "Love Is In Control" (1982) for Donna Summer. In addition, he co-wrote the hit "Stomp!" (1980), for the "Brothers Johnson" and produced and wrote the hit single "Sweet Freedom" (1986), for Michael McDonald. He collaborated with Lionel Richie and Quincy Jones to write the song "Miss Celie's Blues" for the soundtrack to the 1986 film "The Color Purple". Temperton died from cancer.
