SSGT VERNON HUGH SHELTON

(May 21, 1921 - October 1, 2016)

Du Quoin — Vernon Hugh Shelton, 95, passed from this life on Saturday, October 1, 2016, in Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin, Illinois.
He had been a grinder and welder for Illinois Central Railroad for 35 years. Vernon had been a member of the First Baptist Church in Du Quoin.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He had been a staff sergeant and had served in Company D in the 109th Infantry.
He had served in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and central Europe. Vernon received the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with one Silver Star, one Service Stripe, three Overseas Service Bars, Good Conduct Medal and Bronze Star. Vernon was a member of the Du Quoin V.F.W. Post 513 and had been past vice commander. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 647 and Eagles Post 779.

Vernon was born May 21, 1921, in Elkville, Illinois the son of Frealie Emery Shelton and
Jessie Marie (Gossett) Shelton.
He married Opal Fredia Rosenberger on December 21, 1946, in Du Quoin, and she preceded him in death on December 2, 1992.

Vernon is survived by two of his daughters, Nellie Britton and spouse, Ron, of Williamson County, and Verna Blaylock and spouse, Jim, of Perry County, Illinois; seven grandchildren, Julie Cox, and Aaron Beard of Williamson County, Angie Harper of Jackson County,
Jeri Brinkley, Stephanie Chandler all of Williamson County, Eric Blaylock, and
Jamie Lively both of Perry County, Illinois;
his great-grandchildren -
Maggie and Zach Harper; Brittany, Alexis and J.T. Blaylock; Josh and Parker Lively;
Clay, Corey and Cami Jo Brinkley; and
Jake and Jessie Chandler;
his great-great-grandchildren, Jaece and Jaxton Brinkley; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one daughter, Bonnie Beard; one granddaughter, Michelle Soliday; four brothers, Wesley Shelton, Loyd Shelton, Asahel Shelton and Leon Shelton; and one sister, Levetta Walker.
Services will be Wednesday, October 5, 2016, at Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin, with the Rev. Joe Wagner officiating.
Interment will be in Elkville Cemetery.

Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Du Quoin V.F.W., American Legion and the Army National Guard.
