Edna was born "almost blind" according to her son Robert, she had one eye that was completely blind & the other had a "cataract". She was orphaned as a child, her mother Nancy Arizona "Zoni" Nix died when she was 3 yrs old in the Influenza pandemic of 1918, and her father Josephus M "Sephus" Withrow died in 1921 of what was listed as TB but may have been Black Lung Disease when she was 6 yrs old. She and her brother Winfred "Bud" lived with their father's mother Mattie Gaddis - Withrow In Hothouse, Cherokee County, NC after their mother died, they are with her on the 1920 and 1930 census's. Mattie died in 1938, and then Edna lived on with her brother Winfred/Winford & cousin Earl Withrow on their grandmother's farm until she married about 1941.

Edna was a very "gentle" person, she almost never raised her voice, she was not a strong woman according to her son Ronald.

Edna's first husband was William Judson "Jude" Lindsay 1875-1948 of Macon County, NC (see photo), she was his 2nd wife; They had two children:

Ronald Howard Lindsay 1942–
Jewel Ray Lindsay 1945–2000

After Jewel was born, Edna's husband Jude hired a local woman named Grace Milsap to help Edna, Grace was the mother of the blind singer Ronnie Milsap who later became a famous country singer. Ronald said even after they were no longer hiring Grace, she would still visit & sometimes stay overnight, he remembers her taking him & his brother out to eat hamburgers one time, something he had never eaten before. He said Grace Milsap was tall & dark & beautiful, she looked Cherokee. He once saw Ronnie Milsap sitting in a big car with his manager.

After Jude died of a stroke in 1948, Edna & her two sons still lived in their log cabin near Robbinsville, it was down a long dirt road with no electricity & no running water & no indoor bathroom, they stayed there for six years living on the pensions that Jude's sister Etta who lived a mile & a half away got them, a $75 pension from Welfare and the Lion's Club gave Edna another $75/month for her blindness.

Edna had never lived alone before and she wasn't strong enough to discipline two small boys, she had a nervous breakdown six years after her husband died and she was put in the mental hospital in Morganton & given shock treatments for 3 1/2 yrs. Her two sons were put in the South Mountain Institute for four years, then their oldest half-brother Fred Lindsay & his wife Erma took them to live with them in Kernersville, NC near High Point, NC.

After Edna was released from the hospital, she moved into a boarding house for disabled adults in Silva where she lived until she died.

Edna married secondly to Albert Brown in Sylva, NC on 16 Dec 1963, he was born 18 July 1917. They were both residents of the boarding house. Her second husband Albert died a few years after they married.
