Other studies show that people who have led active lives generally continue to be active as they become elderly.

There are exceptions, however. Noah Puckett, 77, of the Argentine area of Kansas City, Kansas, has given up most of his activities since the death of his wife five years ago. His family doesn't visit him. Instead, he drives to their homes.

"I understand. They want to be with their families when they get home from work. When a man gets up to my age the younger folks don't have time for old folks," Puckett said.

Puckett attends church regularly, but passes most of his time watching television. He quit going to senior citizen organizations when his wife died.

Puckett said in recent weeks a car with two people in it has stopped in front of his house several times. Once a man came to the door and asked to use his phone. Fearing the man was a burglar, Puckett kept his door locked and shouted that his phone was out of order.

"I can't stop them from breaking in, but I'll stop them from leaving. I have a gun and I'm going to let them have it," he said. He hasn't reported his fears to police.
