Dec. 8, 1926 - Oct 3, 2016 Houston E "Red" Bates, Sr., 89, died October 3, 2016 following complications from an automobile accident that occurred on February 17, 2016. He leaves his wife of 71 years, Ruby Irene (Jolly) Bates; his sons, Eugene Bates (Patty); and Eric Bates (Julie), grandson Brandon and granddaughter Ashley; his sister, Loretta Bates Ortuza. He was predeceased by his parents John David and Mattie Lucie Bates; his sisters, Estelle Culpepper, Marie Howard, Allene Carlsen, and Linda Jenkins; his brothers, Frank, Howard, Arthur, John, TJ, Elladge and James. He met the love of his life, Irene Jolly, in September of 1944 and married on April 14, 1945. After he proudly served our country in the Navy during WW II, he began his civilian employment at Pullman Standard; later at Woodwood Iron Company (38 years); Alabama Alloy and Luria Brothers. Mr. Bates was a member of Fairfield Highlands Baptist Church since 1957. He enjoyed sharing his love for music with his church family. Included in his hobbies was a love for fishing and spending time on Warrior River. But his main love was his wife and his family. He was very proud of his sons who learned to love music from him, leading them to become owners of Bates Brothers Recording in Hueytown, AL. His two grandchildren brought him much happiness and he cherished every opportunity he had to spend with them. The visitation will be at Fairfield Highlands Baptist from 1pm - 3pm on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 followed by the funeral service at 3pm. Graveside service will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens.
