Richard "Dick" Fischl, 63, of Big Bear City, Calif., formerly of Los Angeles, died Jan. 14 at home. He was the husband of Anne Fischl for 18 years.
A 1959 graduate of Arizona State University, he was a teacher and track coach in the Anaheim (Calif.) School District for more than 35 years before retiring in 1995.
Born in Allentown, he was a son of the late Frank and Helen (Gehringer) Fischl.
A 1954 graduate of Allen High School, he was a halfback on its football team and a member of the track team. He excelled in the 120-yard high hurdles, the 180-yard low hurdles, the 220-yard dash and the 440-yard relay. He won all these events in District 11 and still holds Allen's record in the 120-yard high hurdles.
Fischl was a member of Arizona State's track team, and had attended Long Beach City (Calif.) College, where he won the state championship in the 120-yard high hurdle and held that school's 120-yard high hurdle record for 15 years.
In 1959, he was ranked number three by the National Collegiate Athletic Association in the 120-yard high hurdles.
He was a member of Calvary Church of Santa Ana, Calif.
He was an artilleryman in the Army and served with the California National Guard.
Survivors: Wife; stepsons, Scott and Kevin Hoyt, both in California; brother Frank of Allentown, two step-grandchildren and nieces.
Graveside services: Were Wednesday, Sacred Heart Cemetery, Allentown. Arrangements, Weber Funeral Home, 502 Ridge Ave., Allentown.
