Joe T. Grant, 91, of Hockley, Texas, went home to be with the Lord on September 16, 2016, in Hockley, Texas, accompanied by his wife of almost 49 years, Marie Jernigen Grant, 86. Joe was born in El Dorado, Arkansas, to A.D. and Ethel Grant and was reared in Smackover, Arkansas, until he left in April, 1942, at the age of 17 to join the Marines during World War II. He trained as a radio/gunner and was assigned to a two-man SBD Dauntless dive bomber, and by November, 1942, Joe was engaged in combat on Guadalcanal, where, he was blessed to survive two crash landings on the runway on two consecutive days. After the war, Joe returned to Arkansas, where he worked at a refinery and owned a business in El Dorado before moving to Lake Jackson, Texas, and twelve years later moved to Houston when he married Marie. Joe worked as a superintendent for a homebuilding company, as well as, for several other companies repairing machinery, before going to work for Industrial and Shippers Supply, as the shop and warehouse manager, where he worked for many years until his retirement. In the first five years of his retirement, he cleared land, designed, and built his home by himself. Joe enjoyed watching westerns, sports, especially football, women's college softball, and Little League games. Joe enjoyed playing dominoes at the Hockley Community Center where he and Marie were regular players for 20 years. Since suffering a stroke that left him with limited mobility ten years ago, Joe especially enjoyed his outings with Marie to the Center and visiting with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gone before him are his father A.D. Grant, his mother Ethel Grant, his sister Doris Sneed and her husband George, brother-in-law Madison Tucker, and Joe's son, Joel T. Grant. Joe leaves behind to mourn him, his son James, and wife Anna, their daughter, Sally, and her husband, Michael, and their three children; his son Lynn and wife, Susan, and their children: granddaughter Laurie, grandson Beau and wife Pam and their eight children; grandson Blake and wife, EdLee, and their three children. Also left to mourn are his sister, Gladys Tucker, cousin Rosemary Owles, niece Sharon Lewis and nephews Danny, David, and Gary Sneed; and Joe Tucker; and numerous great-nieces and nephews as well as a host of friends.
