Son of Archer Walters Clayton (1858-1947) and Susan Ann Whipple (1864-1935). He was the last of eight children.
William married Vera Dean Epperson on July 22, 1920 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They became the parents of three children. Barbara died just a few days after her birth. William Harlow and Robert Ellis both served in World War II and returned home to marry and raise families of their own.
William died nearly three years before his wife at age 82.
