Ernest was born the fifth child of eight to Louis Soderquist and Martha Selena Johnson. His parents were Swedish immigrants.
When Ernest was about 5 or 6 years old, the family moved from Colorado to Utah. In 1913 there was a spinal meningitis epidemic. Ernest got meningitis. He died before his tenth birthday.
