She was born June 6, 1917 in Annville, Jackson County, KY to James and Alice Johnston Akemon. On November 25, 1937, she was married in Jackson County to Owen Russell who died January 13, 1984. They moved to Indiana in 1947 and had resided in Connersville 1955. Sallie was dedicated to God in all her actions and enjoyed visiting different churches. She was a member of the Apostolic Church of God, New Castle. She worked hard throughout her life and enjoyed cooking, gardening, and sewing.
Survivors include her grandchildren: James O. Russell of Connersville, whom she and her husband raised, Tessa Marie Russell of Macon, Georgia, Paula Kay Galloway of Indianapolis; Great-grandchildren: Ashley Nichole Russell, Allison Kay Russell, James Owen Russell Jr., Christopher Eric Russell, Barbara Frances Scott, Michelle Chasteen, Mariah Chasteen, Halley Chasteen, Elisha Ford, Christian Ford; one great-great granddaughter; several nieces and nephews in Indiana and Kentucky
