Retired driver for Wise Potato Chip Co.
Charles B. Raber, 84, of Pecora Road, Drums, passed away Monday morning, Jan. 26, 2009, at his residence.
Born in Putneyville, Pa., on Jan. 27, 1924, he was the son of the late William and Mary (Shadle) Raber. He spent the past 65 years in Drums after moving from Nescopeck.
He was employed as a truck driver for Wise Potato Chip in Berwick for 35 years, having retired in 1986.
Charles was a member of St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church, St. Johns.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, where he attained the rank of boatswain's mate second class, and received the following citations: Pacific Theater Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal and Philippine Liberation Ribbon. He was a member of the Valley Vets VFW Post 8161, Conyngham, and the Sampson Museum Naval Vets, Sampson, N.Y. He was also a life member of the Berwick Elks and was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, camping and boating.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, the former Lydia Burger, who passed away Jan. 26, 2005; brothers: Sterling, Harry, William, Clifford, Glenn, Oscar, and Stanley, who died at birth; and sisters: Creola Kesten and Mearl Nevel.
Surviving are a daughter: Debra Ann Sellers, Benton; a granddaughter: Lisa Shultz and her husband Christopher, Berwick; four great-grandchildren: Westley, Austin, Mitchell and Sara Mae Shultz; sisters: Ida Fisher, Florida; Thelma Slattery, Bloomsburg; Irene Burger, Drums; Fern Ray, Schuylkill Haven; Marcella Good and her husband Hank, Drums; and Edna Burger and her husband Woodrow, Nescopeck.
His funeral will be held Friday at 10 a.m. from the Harman Funeral Homes and Crematory Inc. (East), 669 W. Butler Drive, Drums, with his pastor, Sister Janet Stump, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Johns Lutheran and UCC Cemetery, St. Johns. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 7-9 p.m.
