James H. Cook, 83, husband of Pearl Black Cook, of 125 East Forest Drive, Union, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2006 at his home.
Mr. Cook was born in Lockhart, July 28, 1923, a son of the late Jay Cook and Lillie Mae Patrick Cook. He graduated the Beaver Creek Bible Institute. Mr. Cook retired from Torrington Co.-Tyger River Plant and was a member of Lockhart Freewill Baptist Church where he was a Deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was a volunteer with the Monarch Fire Department where he served on the board of directors and was the elected commissioner for Monarch Fire District. Mr. Cook was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II with the 269th Field Artillery Battalion in the European Theater.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Joyce Cook Mincey and Sharon Cook both of Rock Hill; a son, Jimmie Cook and wife Susan of Green Cove Springs, Fla.; two sisters, Ruth Davis of Gaffney and Lucille Smith of Chesnee; a brother, Jerry Cook of Pelion; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006, at Lockhart Freewill Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Brian Bishop and the Rev. Paul Childers. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be Mike Smith, Allen Black, Joe Erwin, Gary Deal, Wayne Baldwin and Franklin White.
The following are asked to assemble at the church to form the honorary escort: Members of the Saints of Old Sunday School Class of the Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church, members of the Monarch Volunteer Fire Department, Ed Crocker, Charles "Buddy" Vanderford and Chris West.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 tonight at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church Bus Fund, 126 Askew Circle, Union, S.C. 29379.
