The Cambridge City (IN) Tribune, Thursday, April 3, 1902
"About 4 o'clock Wednesday evening of last week our community was shocked with the sad news that Valentine Sell had suddenly expired. He hand been feeling as ell as usual, ate a hearty dinner, worked about his house most of the afternoon, and had gone to his training barn. While seated in a chair chatting with friends he was stricken by death and expired in a few moments. Dr. Littel, the attending physician, pronounced heart failure the cause.

The deceased was born in Pottsville, Pa., January, 1819, and was 83 years and 2 months of age. His boyhood days were spent on a farm in Pennsylvania. Afterwards he worked on the canal between Altoona and Holidaysburg and later came to the Miami canal between Dayton and Cincinnati. Late in the 40's he came to the Whitewater canal and ran the last boat before the canal was abandoned. In fact his boat was caught in the basin here by the Indiana Central railroad bridge and shut off from going south. For this reason his boat was purchased by the railroad company. He then purchased from Geo. Devlin the Grey Eagle livery stable, located in the rear of J. W. Marson's furniture warerooms. Later he purchased his present barn and occupied it since as a livery or training barn. He was a member of the firm of Soyez, Sell & Co., liquor refiners. Afterward the same firm engaged in the manufacture of spokes and hubs in the building now occupied by Bertsch & Co. For more than twenty years he was engaged in the retail liquor business, retiring from that business three years ago. At the same time he was an extensive dealer in high class light harness horses and developed some very fast race horses, which gave him a national reputation.

He was married to Mrs. Sarah Gonzales in 1862, who survives him. He was a good husband and an honorable citizen, dealing fair at all times in his business methods and commanding the respect of all who had dealings with him. His religion were morality, honestly, fair dealing, always speaking in the best terms of those he knew, paying strict attention to his own business, and respecting the opinion of his neighbors. Our community has lost a good citizen.

Funeral services were conducted at this late home on Friday by Revs. Day and Lacy, and were quite largely attended. Interment in Riverside."
