Bernice was born in Keo, Arkansas, in 1922, the fifth of six children born to George Washington and Easter Arkansas Haley.
She graduated from England High School in 1940, and received an Associate’s Degree from Central College in Conway, Arkansas in 1942. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in English literature in 1944 from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Prior to attending classes at Ouachita, she met Jesse Morris Ashcraft, a Ouachita student who was speaking at a revival meeting in Lonoke, Arkansas, and vowed to date him when she arrived there. She made good on that promise, and after teaching English for a year in Eudora, Arkansas, she and Morris were married on June 20, 1945.
After raising her family, Bernice earned a Master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She took great satisfaction in her work as head librarian at Winnetonka High School in the North Kansas City School District. When her husband (known to all as “Ash”) became the Dean of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, she continued her career working in the library at the same seminary.
Bernice is survived by two children, Mark, who lives in Las Vegas, NV, and Anna, who lives in Chicago. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Jordan Ashcraft of Gig Harbor, WA, Laura (Ashcraft) Liss of St. Louis, Jesse Ashcraft-Johnson of Boston, and Sarah Ashcraft-Johnson of Chicago.
Memorial services are planned at Elliott Chapel of Westminster Place, Evanston, Illinois, on September 24 at 10:00, and at First Baptist Church in Raleigh on October 15, 2016 (details pending) Inurnment will follow in the Southeastern Theological Seminary Cemetery, Wake Forest next to her husband.
