Helen Louise Adams was born April 28, 1920 in Tullahassee, Oklahoma to a 13 year old mother Leola Rice and she was adopted at birth by Leola's Aunt Selena and her husband John Adams. Four sisters (two biological sisters: Louvinere Thompson Miller and Acylean Thompson Folks; plus two sisters by her adopted parents: Evangeliene Murrell Washington and Gloria Adams Dean; and one biological brother: Maurice Thompson) preceded her in death, also a son, Irving and a grandson Melvin.

Her early education was in Tulsa, Oklahoma where she graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. She moved to Chicago in the early forties, met and married her life long partner, Robert Betts until his death in 1994. Helen worked several jobs until her retirement as a receptionist for the University of Illinois.

Helen was a long faithful member of the West Point Baptist Church serving under two pastors while there. She was a very generous person to her family and many others. She was so full of at all times and loved bid whist cards, the lottery and the casinos.

She was a great Mom, Grandma, great-great grandma and was loved and adored by all of her little ones. They called her "Gram!"

She leaves her daughter, Alberta (Silas); three grandchildren, Linda, Victor and Carla; great grandchildren, Cameron, Victor, Victoria, Torrean and Kiana; and two great-great-great grandchildren: Jada and King Solomon; and a host of nephews and nieces - Bruce, Blaine, Brad, Rudy, Lawrence, James Clifford, Sue and Brenda and many other family and friends. She will be sorely missed!

Helen Betts funeral was held at Taylor Funeral Home in Chicago at 11:00 AM on June 2014 with her cousin Elaine Arrington delivering the eulogy.

Please note: Helen didn't have any biological children and the children and grandchildren listed are descendants of her husband Robert Betts although she loved and treated them as her own.
