Doris A. Sutton (nee Schlicht) of Manchester, Michigan, age 84, passed away on the evening of February 26, 2014, at her home. She was born August 8, 1929, on her family’s farm in Sharon Township, the eldest daughter of Clarence W. and Hilda A. (Feldkamp) Schlicht. On May 6, 1950, she married Hugh Richard Sutton at Emanuel Evangelical and Reformed Church in Manchester, and he preceded her in death on May 27, 1985. She lived in the Manchester area her entire life, residing at her home on East Main Street for over 60 years. She attended Davidter School, a rural, one-room schoolhouse in Sharon Township, and Manchester High School, where she graduated in 1947 as Salutatorian of her class. She worked at the Manchester Bakery, as a public service representative for Michigan Bell Telephone, and as a dental assistant for Dr. J.R. Jones. She then “retired” in March of 1954, and devoted the next 20 years to raising her two daughters, Laura Kathleen and Martha Mary. She returned to the workforce in 1974 as a salesperson for Jacobson’s Stores, Inc. She officially retired in August of 1994. She had a lifelong love of literature, the arts, and travel, including road trips across the state of Michigan and to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to visit her grandchildren. She was extremely interested in local history, and acted as the unofficial co-chair of Emanuel Church’s 150th Anniversary Committee.

She is survived by her children, Laura Sutton of Manchester and Martha (George) Blood of Philadelphia, PA; grandchildren Ellen Blood (Andrew) Koopman and Anne, Clara “Freddie,” Madeline and Henry Blood; great-granddaughter, Jane Zhou; and her sister, Joyce (Richard) McClurg, of Montclair, NJ and her sister-in-law Grace Schlicht, of Lyons, OH; six nieces and nephews; and her dear friend, Patricia Ulrich of England. In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Jerrol Schlicht.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at the Borek Jennings Funeral Home, Jenter Chapel, in Manchester, between the hours of 2 and 4 p.m. and 6 and 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at Emanuel United Church of Christ in Manchester with Pastor Marsha Meabon officiating. She will be buried at Oak Grove Cemetery in Manchester. Memorial contributions may be given to: 1) Emanuel Church Steeple Restoration; 2) The Manchester High School Alumni Association’s Scholarship Fund; 3) Manchester Area Historical Society.
