Daniel G. Higgins Sr., 83, of St. James City, Fla., formerly of Plum Borough, died Sept. 26, 2016, with his wife and family by his side. He was born March 28, 1933, in the Homewood section of Pittsburgh, to the late Thomas and Elizabeth (Murphy) Higgins. Dan served his country during the Korean War in the Air Force. He has lived in St. James City, Fla., for the past 26 years and had lived in Plum Borough for more than 30 years. He worked as a machinist for the Westinghouse Research Center, Churchill, for more than 35 years. He is a member of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church, Bokeelia, Fla., and the American Legion, St. James City, Fla. Daniel was a wonderful husband and father and a true gentleman, who was loved by everyone he met. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Lou (Benek) Higgins; his children, Daniel G. (Beverly) Higgins Jr., of West Deer, with whom he had been staying, Mary Frances (Mehdi) Karimi, of France, Matthew (Kathy) Higgins, of Montana, and Martin (Erin) Higgins, of Plum Borough; grandchildren, Megan, Bridget, Daniel, Liam and Aidan; and siblings, Gladys Tedesco, of Port Orange, Fla., and Kevin Higgins, of Plum Borough. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Rose Marie Zwergel, Thomas Higgins and Jean Farrell.

The family invites friends to a Catholic funeral Mass at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, in Our Lady of Joy Catholic Church, 2000 O'Block Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15239 (Plum Borough). Daniel will be laid to rest with his parents in Calvary Cemetery, Pittsburgh. Arrangements were entrusted to the SIWICKI-YANICKO FUNERAL HOME, 23 McKrell Road, Russellton, West Deer.
