He was born on June 29, 1917 in Elmdale, IN, the son of Avery and Leva (Utterback) Merrell.
Russell was a graduate of Wingate High School. After high school he joined the United States Army from November 9, 1943 until March 10, 1946. He married Marjorie A. Dragoo on November 4, 1939 at her mother’s home in Muncie.
Mr. Merrell worked for Moore Company for seven years, he owned and operated Merrell’s Grocery with his wife, and worked forty-one years at Delco Remy retiring in 1982. Russell was an avid steam engine engineer he participated and attended many shows in the Midwest and the nation. He was a lifetime member of Drake County Steam Threshers Association and Tri State Gas Engine and Tractor Association. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Shawnee Heights Baptist Church and The Pioneer Engineers Club of Rushville, where he and his family attended shows since 1952. He was also a member of UAW # 662, The Salamonie Valley Bird Dog Club and he participated in many field trials with his dog, Rex.
Survivors include children, Karen K. Merrell, James R. Merrell (wife, Becky), Kristi J. Bossung (husband, Lynn); grandchildren, Ryan J. Merrell, Angie Mays, twin grandchildren, Asaf Levy and Danielle Levy; and great-granddaughter, Carly Mays; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, and one sister.
Services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Mt. Pleasant Chapel, 7901 W. Isanogel Rd., Muncie with Dr. Dennis Hammons officiating. Burial will follow in Beech Grove Cemetery.
