Lance Cpl. Nick Palmer of Leadville, Colorado decided to join the Marine Corps when he was a junior in high school and graduated Lake County High School in 2005 where he was an athlete who played football as a defensive end distinguishing himself on the field as a two-way lineman under the high expectations of his father, a coach for the team and the director of public works for the county. He was known for his pranks, such as sticking goo on door handles, and for his love of country music. He never failed to have an Otis Spunkmeyer cookie or granola bar hidden somewhere on his body. At the most stressful times, he would pull out a cookie on the battlefield. He liked what the Corps stood for and the physicality and he wanted to be one of the few, the proud. A native of Great Falls Nick moved with his family to Colorado in 1987. He was 19.
