He then moved his family to Gordon Co, GA where he was enumerated in the Sonora Community on 19 Jun 1860 living next door to a widow named Edith Nix and her children. They were both living in the same neighborhood as Andrew Adams who is also believed to be a son of James W Adams. To make it even tighter Edley J Adams and Clayton Adams (also thought to be sons of James W) are also living in the Sonora Community. Edith Nix was also the daughter of James W Adams.
These were perilous times in Gordon Co and North Georgia. Union General Sherman made his famous march to Savannah in 1864 cutting a path of death and destruction which included the very area where the children of James W lived. There are no records or even tradition concerning the fate of William and his wife Mary, but in 1870 all four of their children were living with relatives or in foster homes. They could have been victims of bushwackers or an epidemic of disease. They seem to have vanished during the War or shortly thereafter. Their children managed to survive with the help of friends and relatives.
