Very little is known about William L, since he barely appears in records. Col Frank L Adams, an early researcher of the Adams families who came out of Caswell Co, NC and passed through Pendleton Dist, SC on their way to Habersham (now White) Co, GA observed in a research paper he wrote in the early sixties the following, "Note: I am of the opinion that William L Adams and Francis Marion Adams were sons of James W Adams. On 6 March 1852 James W Adams sold to William L Adams lot 13, 4th dist (containing 250 acres) for $25.00. On the same day, acting as attorney for James Pewgh he sold lot 14, 4th Dist to Francis M Adams for $100.00. " The author agrees with Col Adams and also notes that William L married about 1851, since his first child was born 14 Aug 1852. On 15 Sep 1850 William appears to have been living in the household of James Killey (Kelley) in the Peavine Dist of Walker Co, GA shortly before he returned to Habersham (now White) Co to take his vows with Mary Whitley.
He then moved his family to Gordon Co, GA where he was enumerated in the Sonora Community on 19 Jun 1860 living next door to a widow named Edith Nix and her children. They were both living in the same neighborhood as Andrew Adams who is also believed to be a son of James W Adams. To make it even tighter Edley J Adams and Clayton Adams (also thought to be sons of James W) are also living in the Sonora Community. Edith Nix was also the daughter of James W Adams.
These were perilous times in Gordon Co and North Georgia. Union General Sherman made his famous march to Savannah in 1864 cutting a path of death and destruction which included the very area where the children of James W lived. There are no records or even tradition concerning the fate of William and his wife Mary, but in 1870 all four of their children were living with relatives or in foster homes. They could have been victims of bushwackers or an epidemic of disease. They seem to have vanished during the War or shortly thereafter. Their children managed to survive with the help of friends and relatives.
