Henry Kahalewai was a senior enlisted man who planned to retire next year after 20 years in the Army to build a home on land he owned in Upper Puna. He was raised in Hilo. He enlisted in the Army after graduating from Hilo High School because job and career opportunities in Hilo were limited at the time. Henry served two tours of duty during and after the Desert Storm campaign to liberate Kuwait in 1991, then two more tours during the current war in Iraq. He liked the military life, coming from a family with a long history of military service, including his father, grandfather, and his uncle. He was 44.
