Fred R. Watson, Jr. (Lovingly known as Junior) born, Sept. 19, 1928, in McKinney, Texas, died, Sept. 22, 2016, while a residence at Whisperwood Nursing & Rehabilitation Center at 88 years old. Fred was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred R. Watson of Carlyle, Texas. He was the third born of seven children. Fred married Thelma Miller in 1947. He joined the Marine Corps and served in the Korean War in the Anti-Tank company, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division. He was awarded the Marine Corps Marksman of the Year for two consecutive years. After being injured in the war he returned to the states and civilian life in Carlyle, Texas. Over the next 40 years, he worked for Ben E. Keith, Lubbock Fire Department, U.S. Army as a helicopter mechanic in Ft. Walters, and other jobs providing a living for his growing family. Serving the Lord Jesus Christ through his church was always an important part of the Watson family. They were active members of the several churches they attended throughout the years. Thelma passed after a short illness in 1995. Fred attended a church event at Church on the Rock where he met and eventually married Rebecca Brown in 2002. During the years they served together at Church on the Rock in various capacities including missionary trips to Guatemala, Israel, Washington D.C., and Mexico City. They were also home group leaders and actively participated in the birthing of the Dream Center in Lubbock. They were honored by South Plains Honor Flight as a Korean Veteran with a trip to Washington D.C. Fred is survived by his wife of 14 years, Rebecca; his older brother, Albert; and four children, Denise Baker and husband, John, Tony Watson and wife, Lisa, Kristie Van Hoorn, and Steve Watson and wife, Tina, two stepchildren, Richard Brown and wife, Anita, and Michael Brown and wife, Kim; and 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
