George Hobart Spitz was the son of George H. Spitz and Christiana Hedges. By 1900 the family was living in Indianapolis, Indiana. On July 29, 1919, George married Leona Ethel Townsend in Indianapolis. They had two daughters, June and Jean.

George served with the U.S. Army in the Panama Canal Zone. By 1930, George and Leona had relocated to Detroit, Michigan, where he was a U.S. Customs Inspector. On September 22, 1934, George married Cecile Fairfield in Detroit. They had one daughter, Joan.

George was an active Mason: a Past Master of the Rubicon Lodge; Scottish Rite, Moslem Shrine and Order of the Easter Star. He also belonged to the American Federation of Government Employees and the Beaudry Post 126, American Legion.
