Mary M. Gates, 83, of Conneaut, Ohio, died Wednesday afternoon, August 9, at UHHS Brown Memorial Hospital. She was born August 1, 1923, in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and was the daughter of James and Elizabeth (Murphy) Conway. A Conneaut resident since 1946, Mrs. Gates worked in her husband's medical office for many years, and was a member of St. Mary Church. She enjoyed reading, was a member of the Fortnightly Club; and also supported and was a member of the Cleveland Museum of the Arts. Mrs. Gates was a member of the Kahkwa Club in Erie, and was an excellent golfer, having made two holes-in-one. Surviving Mrs. Gates are her daughter and son-in-law M. Michele and H. Steven Bailen of Lakewood, Ohio; her son Stephen E. Gates of Phoenix, Arizona; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Mary and Erin Kathleen Gates; her sister Dorothy Ringswald of Baker, Louisiana; and her brother and sister-in-law James and Mary Carrol Conway of Louisville, Kentucky. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Dr. Stephen E. Gates in 1994; her daughter Linda A. Young in 2005; and her brother Thomas Conway.
