Motion Picture Director. Commonly referred to as the "Godfather of Gore", he will be remembered for creating the "splatter" sub-genre of horror films. He studied journalism in college and became a professor of English literature at Mississippi State University. After a stint working at a radio station in Oklahoma, he joined an advertising agency in Chicago, where he made TV commercials in the early 1950s. With producer David Friedman, they embarked on a string of then-shocking features, which were made for minimal costs and found a ready audience in what would become known as the "grindhouse circuit". Initially concentrating on the world of low-budget sex films, Lewis made his mark with cinematic violence in the mid-60s with 'Blood Feast' (1963), 'Two Thousand Maniacs! (1964)' and 'Color Me Blood Red' (1965). The films made money, and Lewis continued to push the envelope through the late '60s and early '70s with films such as 'The Gruesome Twosome' (1967), 'The Wizard of Gore' (1970) and 'The Gore Gore Girls' (1972). Lewis decided to retire from film making in the early 70s, after his style of low-budget horror had run its course, and returned to advertising. He wrote and published over twenty books of marketing guides, including titles such as 'How to Make Your Advertising Twice As Effective at Half the Cost' and 'Sales Letters That Sizzle: All the Hooks, Lines and Sinkers You’ll Ever Need to Close Sales'. Lewis, who appeared regularly at horror film conventions and returned to film making with 'Blood Feast 2: All U Can Eat' (2002). 'Chainsaw Sally' (2004), 'Smash Cut' (2009) and 'Zombificador' (2013), died of natural causes.
