Bolivian Statesman. Born David Padilla Arancibia, he served as the 64th President of Bolivia from November 24, 1978 to August 8, 1979. He served in the Bolivian Army and rose to the post of Commander of the Army. He was serving in this post when he ousted the government of General Juan Pereda on November 24, 1978. He took over as president and promised to turn over power after a presidential election which would take place in 1979. He was popular during his short term in office. The 1979 presidential election turned out to be a fiasco and he ended up handing power over to the president of the Senate, Walter Guevara, who had been chosen president until new elections in 1980. He left office respected by the Bolivian people.
