For Adele's funeral, burial, and surviving family members, see Adele Badt Colen obituary, _Dallas Morning News_, Dallas, Texas, 29 November 1984, page 14D.
Adele's father, J. M. Badt, was a native of "Thorn, Germany," now Toruń, Poland. He immigrated to the United States about 1869, arriving by 1871 in Waco, Texas, where one of his brothers had earlier settled. He opened his own business a few years later in Mineola, Texas, but soon moved to Tyler, Texas, and then on to Mount Pleasant, Texas, in 1883. "He retired in 1930 after building one of the state's largest mercantile establishments and achieving a long record in civic service." He served thirty-six years as president of the Mount Pleasant School Board, and worked to promote "higher educational standards in rural schools." During the Depression he extended credit to his rural customers. After a tornado devastated the area about 1915 he "cared for all distressed families." During the World War he "sponsored the organization of a volunteer company of soldiers, some of whom later reached his native city in Germany." (Five of Mr. Badt's sons served in the military.)
Mr. Badt's first wife, "Augusta Spiro of New Orleans," whom he married in 1883, died in 1892, "leaving seven children." A year later Mr. Badt married his sister-in-law, Ida Spiro, who survived him at his death on 27 January 1940 at Mount Pleasant, Texas. Three daughters—Mrs. H. Seidenman and Mrs. Donald Brin, both of Dallas, Texas, and Mrs. Louis M. Cohen of Woodward, Oklahoma; six sons—Capt. Harry Badt of the USS Tuscaloosa; Dr. M. B. Badt of Fort Worth, Texas; N. C. [_sic_] Badt of Durham, N. C.; Hyman B. Badt of Shreveport, Louisiana; Clarence Badt and Sig H. Badt of Dallas; and thirteen grandchildren also survived him.
