Elwanda Estella Surratt Hooper, 80, a resident of Alston Brook, formerly of Denton, died Wednesday, May 30, 2007, at Alston Brook.

At Mrs. Hooper's prior request, no services will be held.

Mrs. Hooper was born May 24, 1927, in Davidson County to John Roosevelt and Ellie Smith Surratt. She retired from the Davidson County Clerk of Superior Court's office as assistant clerk of court after 25 years of service. She was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church on Loflin Road in Denton and had formerly served on the State Mental Health Board for many years. In addition to her parents, preceding her in death were her husband, Edwin Willys Hooper; a brother, Lawrence Surratt; and a sister, Geraldine Nance.

She is survived by two sons, John Yates of Denton and Kevin Yates of Thomasville; a daughter, LaVera Yates Bennett of Salisbury; a brother, Spencer Surratt of Denton; a sister, Zola Younts of Lexington; three grandchildren, Julie Watford Myers, Joshua Yates and Kasey Yates; and four great-grandchildren, Tucker Myers, Tyler Myers, Tinsleigh Myers and Macen Sage Nobles.
