"Uncle Harve" Curry, 81, prominent resident of Elk Creek, where he had resided all his life, died at 2:45 p.m. yesterday at his home after an illness of six years. He had suffered a stroke of paralysis Monday.
Death of this blacksmith and minister was learned with much regret by those residing in the Elk Creek section, for he had figured prominently in its early history.
He was a blacksmith by trade, earning his living in that occupation for 40 years. He was employed with the Puritan Coal Corporation for 21 years and was still a member in good standing of Puritan Local No. 6001, United Mine Workers of America.
Mr. Curry, a deeply religious man and one who acquired the respect and trust of all who knew him, had preached the Gospel for 55 years, being a minister of the Freewill Baptist Church.
He was one of five brothers whose ages aggregate more than 400 years. They are L. V. S. Curry, 85, of Elk Creek; John A. Curry 83, of Lucasville, Ohio; P. H. Curry, 79, of Elk Creek, and Joe Curry, 75, of Elk Creek.
Born September 21, 1866, in the Elk Creek section, he was a son of the late Billy and Sarah Ann Varney Curry. He was married to Lucinda Farley who survives.
In addition to his wife and brothers, he leaves four children, who are Mrs. Wayne Parsley, Mrs. John Tiller, Mrs. Sam Justice, Mrs. Thomas Ferrell, Mrs. Rudolph Kirk, all of Route 1, Delbarton; and Mrs. Homer Hatfield of Varney; Julius, Lee, Billy and Rush Curry of Route 1, Delbarton; the Rev. Jeff Curry of Monaville; Elbert Curry of Baltimore, Md; Albert Curry of Lando Mines; and Garnet Curry of Ragland; one sister, Mrs. Sallie Slater, 73, of Chattaroy; and 72 grandchildren and 82 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Lower Elk Creek Church tomorrow at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Dennis Roberts of Whitman officiating. Burial will follow in the Lower Farley cemetery with the Hale Funeral Home of Delbarton in charge.
