Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until November 14, 1945, 1 year and 1 day after he went missing as was the custom.

Burton served as a Ensign & Pilot of a Grumman Avenger, Torpedo Squadron Eleven, U.S.S. Hornet (CV-12), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Connecticut prior to the war.

Burton was declared "Missing In Action" in a bombing mission off the Hornet during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and Purple Heart.
