The Durrough family moved to Ohio when Susan was a teen, where she met John. After they were married, John & Susan moved out to Iowa. They did not do well there, and Susan is said to have especially hated it because of the lack of trees. After a series of years of crop failures, John took a trip back to Indiana in 1861 to find a new homestead. In 1861, John moved the family back to Indiana where they established themselves and raised their family in the community of Linton. Susan loved the new farmstead and its forests, as well as the all-German community that surrounded them. All of it probably reminded her of growing up in the Appalachians.
