Monarch of Spain. Designated king in 1700, he consolidated his government following a long dispute over the succession to the throne degenerated into a war involving the Bourbons, Habsburgs, the Netherlands and England. In fact, his predecessor Charles II of Habsburg, the last of this dynasty to reign in Spain, had no direct descendants. However, his definitive ascent to the throne was conditioned by the renunciation of the domains of Menorca, Gibraltar, the southern Netherlands, Naples, Milan and Sardinia (1714). In spite of everything, Philip V again tried in vain to regain the lost territories by venturing into another war against England and his ally Prussia which ended with a series of defeats in the Caribbean and Gibraltar, and with the signing of the Treaty of Paris (1729).
