He served in Ferguson's South Carolina Light Artillery Company. In 1863, he was wounded at Jackson, Mississippi.


He was the son of James Ferguson and Abigail Ferguson.

Per The Baltimore Sun published Thursday, April 25, 1867, he married Jeannie B. Swann, daughter at the residence of her father, Governor Thomas Swann on Tuesday, April 23, 1867. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Dr. Mahan.

They were the parents of five children.
