Juanita Bellomy was born November 11, 1847 in Santa Clara County, California the daughter of George W. Bellomy and María Timotea de Jesús Bernal. Juana, at age 20, marries Charles Willard Hinman on March 1, 1868 in Santa Clara County and they have two children, Rebecca Hinman and Ulysses Grant Hinman. In the 1870 U.S. Census, Juana Hinman is living with her mother “Jesúsa Bellamy”, her husband Charles W. Hinman and their daughter Rebecca age 1 in San Jose. On December 4, 1875, at age 26 Juanita marries Juan Bernal age 24 in Santa Clara County. The California County Marriage record states that Martha Juana Bellamy, born 1848 married Juan Bernal, born 1851. The 1880 Census shows them on Race Street in San José with Martha J. Bernal the wife of Juan Bernal. They are farmers with four children, Ulises (Hinman) 7, (daughter) Jesús 2, Barbara 9-months, born in September 1879 and Mary Bernal 7, who may be a niece.

At the same location in 1900, Juan Bernal is a farmer 48, birth date June 1851. His wife is Martha J. Bernal 44, birth date June 1855; her father and mother were both born in California. Martha is the mother of eleven children with eleven living. The seven children listed as living at home are Henry 16, John 14, Lena 12, Rosie 10, Edward 8, Clement 8 and Philip Bernal 6.

On March 22, 1904, Juan Bernal dies at age 52 in San Francisco, California. The San José Evening News reports that he was the beloved husband of Juana M. Bernal and father of Henry, John, Lena, Rosie and Edward Bernal, the late Mrs. Jesús Mesa, and brother of Antone, Donisho, Gabriel, Santos, Louis, John D. Bernal, Mrs. Rebecca Guerrero and Mrs. Gonzales. His remains were taken to St. Patrick Church in San José for services and then to Calvary Catholic Cemetery for internment. There is no memorial stone for Juan Bernal in the cemetery.

By 1910, Juanita Jennie Bernal age 60 born about 1850 and a widow is at home in Halls Valley along Mt. Hamilton Road in San José, Santa Clara County, California. She is living with her daughter Rosie S. Bernal Gifford 19, her husband Alfred Gifford 43 and Joseph Bernal 8, a nephew of Rosie. Juanita is the mother of twelve children with eight living. She is able to read, write and speak English but her native tongue is Spanish. Living next door with another family is Juanita’s unmarried son Henry Bernal 27, who is a laborer on a farm.

(Calculated birth of November 11, 1847). The memorial stone at Calvary Catholic Cemetery for Juanita is shared with her son’s name “Henry Bernal 1884-1926”.

Epilogue: The 1920 Census shows Henry W. Bernal age 37 living with his wife Perpetua M. Bernal age 40 in Halls Valley along Mt. Hamilton Road in San José. He is working on a stock ranch as a “rider” or cowboy.
