Thelbert graduated from West Plains High School and attended Iowa State College. He was a veteran having served his country during World War II. He departed from West Plains on October 17, 1942 for Great Lakes Navy Training Station arriving there on October 27, 1942 then traveling to Ames, Iowa for 16 weeks of electrical training. The USS Cincinnati would be his home for the next 30 months. Thelbert was discharged from the Navy on October 16, 1945 at Lambert Airport, St. Louis, Mo. He enlisted in the Missouri National Guard and served twenty-one years.
Thelbert married Ada Kathleen Reid on March 26, 1948, she preceded him in death on July 28, 1989. They had three children; Doyle, Brenda and Daniel. On October 27, 1991 he was married to Elizabeth "Betty" Marie Skinner.

Thelbert had one brother, Clifford who is buried at Kiowa County, OK and LeeVona who is buried at Shavers Campground Cemetery, Oxford, AR who are not linked below. His brother, Randall still survives.
