Chester F. Beres of Williamsville, an Air Force retiree who also worked as an inspector for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, died Friday in McAuley Residence, Town of Tonawanda. He was 83.
Born in Cheektowaga, Mr. Beres was a graduate of Bishop Ryan High School and studied at Erie Community College after serving in the Air Force during the Korean War. In 1957, Mr. Beres re-enlisted in the Air Force and served on active duty for more than 20 years. He retired as a master sergeant.
In his career on the border, Mr. Beres inspected cargo and trucks, primarily at the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge.
He was an active member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, where he was an altar server, usher, member of Young at Heart Seniors and the Holy Name Society. He also was a member of the A.J. Jurek American Legion Post, Swormville, and was a Eucharistic minister at the Weinberg Campus. He also was an avid bowler and gardener.
Mr. Beres' first wife, the former Teresa Rogala, died in 2003.
Survivors include his second wife, the former Joan DiNunzio; a daughter, Sharon Schinnamon; two sons, Gary and Timothy; a stepdaughter, Ann Marie Wrobel; a stepson, Michael Moore; four sisters, Aloise, Irene, Stella and Joan; a brother, Francis Tidd; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:15 a.m. Monday in St. Leo the Great Church, 885 Sweet Home Road, Amherst, following prayers at 8:30 a.m. in the Amigone Funeral Home, 5200 Sheridan Drive, Amherst.
