Augusta Olivia Brand was born 7 May 1870, in the province of Ostergotland in central Sweden near Appuna. She was the oldest of seven children born to Johanna Wilhelmina Lund (1846-1925) and Johan August Brand (1842-1926) who were married in 1867. She was confirmed in the Lutheran Church of Sweden in Appuna.

Augusta and her sister Althea Matilda Brand (1872-1937, later Mrs. Alfred Peterson) came to America in 1889, with a family connection, Uncle Charlie Anderson. (I am uncertain how exactly he was related.) Their brother Carl Oscar Brand (1878-1932) later came to America with Charlie Anderson, as well. (Evidently, Charlie Anderson kept going back to Sweden to bring other people to America.)

Augusta married August M. Matson (1868-1950) on 12 Sept. 1895, at Bishop Hill, Illinois. They lived in Illinois until 1913, when they bought a farm south of Kiester, Minnesota. They had seven children: Oliver August Matson 1897-1985), Alice Althea Wilhelmina Matson Pankow (1900-1984), Grace Matilda Matson Oppedahl (1903-1978), Victor David Matson (1904-1988), Everett Oscar Matson (1908-1990), Hilda Irene Matson Lubbess (1912-1983) and Ruby Louise Matson Salt Brooks (1914-2005).

Augusta Olivia Brand Matson died on 28 Dec. 1938, at the age of 68. The following obituary was printed at the time of her death:

"Last Rites Held Saturday for Mrs. A. Matson

"Laid to Rest in Fairview Cemetery Following Impressive Services

"In simple but impressive services at the home, and in the United Brethren Church, Mrs. A. M. Matson was carried to her final resting place, on Saturday, December 31. Rev. J. A. Downing, pastor of the church, assisted by Rev. M. W. Griswold, a close friend of the family, conducted the services. Interment was in Fairview cemetery.

"Musical numbers were rendered by the church choir, a duet by Mrs. G. D. Baker and Mrs. A. C. Pankow, and a solo by F. E. Thompson. Floral contributions were many and beautiful. Pall bearers were Ole Nelson, M. J. Herrick, Henry Peterson, G. D. Baker, T. D. Robertson, and Ernest Wolfe.

"Augusta Olivia Brand was born on May 7th, 1870, in Sweden. There she grew to womanhood and was confirmed in the Lutheran church in Sweden. She came to America in 1889 to Galva, Illinois, and while there joined the Swedish Methodist Episcopal Church.

"On September 12, 1895, she was married to August M. Matson. To them were born three sons and four daughters, Oliver of Kiester, Victor of Amboy, Minn., Everett of Seattle, Wash., Alice (Mrs. H. H. Pankow) of Kiester, Grace (Mrs. Melvin Oppedahl) of Kiester, Hilda (Mrs. George Lubbess) of Oroville, Washington, and Ruby of Seattle, Wash.

"Mr. and Mrs. Matson and family moved from Illinois to Minnesota in 1913, and settled on the farm two miles south of Kiester, and since then this has been their home.

"Mrs. Matson was a hard-working, industrious woman. No one knows this better than Mr. Matson and her sons and daughters; to take care of her family has been no light task, but her work was not confined to the home, nor the farm, for she found time to render service to the cause of Christ, and the United Brethren church, of which she was a valued and honored member.

"She had a wonderful sense of appreciation for any service rendered to her, or for any small token of love or good-will, her gratitude was great. She had been in failing health for some months, but able to be up and around until about two weeks before her death.

"During the last few days of her life spent in weakness, but in perfect submission to the Lord's will, she awaited the Home call which came Wednesday afternoon at 1:45.

"She leaves to mourn her death her husband, three sons and four daughters, twelve grandchildren, two sisters and one brother in Sweden, beside other relatives and many friends.

"We thank God for the life she lived, for the purity of her spirit, for the strength of her love, and for the depth of her Christian faith."
