Elizabeth Stone Cochran, 81, of Seminole Trail, Cartersville, Georgia, passed away Sunday, September 18, 2016.
Mrs. Cochran was born February 13, 1935 in Bartow County, Georgia, daughter of the late Moses Augustus (Gus) Stone and Lillie Crowe Stone. She went to work in 1952; after graduating from Cassville High School, for The Daily Tribune News and the Weekly Tribune News, then known as the Tribune Publishing Company owned by Milton L. Fleetwood who served as editor, publisher and also wrote a column "Report To The People". She was unmarried at the time and was called "Miss Stone" by Mr. Fleetwood. She had served in many capacities at the newspaper and prior to retirement, after almost 60 years, told friends and acquaintances that she had done everything at the newspaper except operate the press.
She married Jackie J. Cochran in 1955 and moved to San Antonio, TX where he was serving in the U.S. AirForce. They became the parents of two sons, Jackie, Jr and Gary while in Texas. Mr. & Mrs. Cochran and their sons came back to Cartersville at the end of 1957 and she went to work at the newspaper in 1958 where she remained until retirement.
She was also active in the community, serving with many clubs and became a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church where she immediately found a place of service and ended her service there as a General Officer serving in the capacity of keeping the records for both Sunday Schools.
After retirement she spent most of her time in her yard and gave lots of bouquets to friends and relatives. She also baked many desserts and casseroles which she also shared with friends and acquaintances.
Preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jackie J. Cochran, her son, Jackie J. Cochran, Jr. who died in 2001 while playing basketball at Dellinger Park.
She is survives by her son, Gary L. Cochran and his wife Renee; grandson, Hunter L. Cochran; 2 sisters, Louise S. Boyd and Gussie S. Ford; many nieces & nephews, great nieces & nephews, great great nieces & nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning September 22nd at 11:00 a.m. in the Owen Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Richard Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens.
Serving as pallbearers are Eddie Hatfield, Shepard Hatfield, Jay Paul, Blake Martin, Randy Berrey, Van Gilstrap.
