Bio:
Rev. Alvah B. DeWolf, of Lee Centre, Ill., was bn in Cortland Co. N.Y., Sept. 15, 1815, and died April 16, 1887.
He was married to Mary Pomeroy, June 14, 1840, and united with the Free Baptist church in 1853. He was sincere in his convictions and piety, honest and successful in business, not demonstrative in anything, but quietly filled his place through life and left a handsome fortune for his "friends and the good of the world."
Portions of his property were distributed before his death, and his widow has since given $16,000 to Hillsdale College [Mich], $1000 to Storer College, $500 to Winnebago College, $200 to Rochester Seminary and various other sums to missions and other benevolent purposes."
--from "Cyclopedia of Free Baptists," pub. 1889, by Burgess and Ward, p. 160.
--------
The Lee Co. censuses record their residence from about 1850 on. His mother, Eliza DeWolf, age 84, b. NY, was in the 1870 Lee Co. census. There appeared to be a son, Andrew DeWolf in the 1850 Lee Co. census, age 10y, but don't know if he died before adulthood?
The Lee Co. Cemetery list of deaths show Alvah's name in Lee Centre, and I think he would be buried beside Mary. His name may be on the other side of the impressive stone for Mary.
