Carolyn had a long and distinguished civil service career working for the US Air Force. She raised her family for 4 years abroad in Italy, and returned to spend the majority of her years working at the Pentagon in Washington D. C. She rose to a supervisory level as a security clearance adjudicator and was well respected by those who worked with and for her.
After her retirement in 1993, she became an active volunteer in her community, serving on the board of directors of her condominium association and working in the association office.
Carolyn was a lifelong learner who challenged herself to do things like automotive repair, interior construction, ceramics and more. She was an accomplished seamstress, and avid reader and crossword puzzler. She loved interior design and worked hard to create a beautiful home for her family. She was fun-loving, loved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Carolyn is survived by her three daughters, Mindy Whitley and Cherill Anderson, both of Manassas, VA and Tracy Hughes (Dave) of Kennebunkport, ME. Also surviving are fours sisters: Joan (Phil) Little of Marian, Barbara (Ray) Hamm of Ipava, Marilee (Gary) Griffin of Aurora, OH and Donna (Wayne) Layne of Peoria; three grandchildren, Sidney Carpenter, Elliot and Eliza Hughes; and one great-grandchild, Ryan Rocha.
Cremation rites were accorded. A celebration of life memorial service was held at her home in Manassas on July 9, 2016. A graveside memorial service was held on September 10, 2016 at Summum Cemetery where Carolyn was laid to rest between her parents.
An abbreviated version of the obituary was originally published in the South Fulton Astoria Argus on May 18, 2016.
