James Evander Denman was born to Elizabeth "Beth" Moore and William Denman (d. 1861). They were married in his in-laws home on February 4, 1830. James and his siblings were raised in Amite Country, Mississippi.

James married Amanda Marsalis January 8, 1857. After his first wife passed he married Mrs. Mary L. "Mollie" Garrett of Fair River on May 26, 1902 in Lawrence Cty MS.

During the Civil War he served in Company H., Dixie guards, 39th Mississippi Regiment.
