Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He was born in Massachusetts. He entered the Union Navy in Massachusetts. He was awarded the CMOH under General Order 45, dated December 31, 1864. His citation reads: "Shell man on No. 8 on board the USS Harford during the successful actions against Fort Morgan, rebel gunboats, and the ram Tennessee in Mobile Bay, 5 August 1864. Although severely wounded when the ship sustained numerous hits under the enemy's terrific shellfire, Stanley continued to pass shell until forced by the loss of blood to go below."
