DIED AT FUNKS GROVE

William Hines Died Yesterday Forenoon at Age of 87 Years - Was Pioneer Resident

William Hines, one of the well known residents of Funks Grove Township, died yesterday forenoon at his home near McIlvain, after a lingering illness with a complication of diseases due to the debilities of old age.
The deceased was born in Ohio, April 19, 1824, and came to this country about twenty-five years ago. He purchased a farm near McIlvain consisting of one hundred acres and here he has since resided, he leaves the wife and six children, John, William, Harvey, Alvin, Frank and Miss Effie all of whom reside in the vicinity of McIlvain. The funeral services will be held at the residence Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock and the interment will be in the Passwater cemetery near Heyworth.

Children of William and Sophia (Lebo) Hines:
Frank Hines (1862-1958)
Alvin Hines (1867-1947)
John Hines (1868-1933)
James Hines (Died in Infancy)
Harvey Hines (1873-1959)
Bertha Hines (1874-1890)
William Hines (1879-1963)
Effie Hines (1880-1967)

Sadly, William Hines Sr. never received a tombstone. I was told by William's granddaughter, Hazel (Hines) Morrow that William was not well thought of by his family. He refused or couldn't work, maybe it was the lingering illness mentioned in his obituary. He would just sit on his porch and play his fiddle. The family resented him for this and this is why I believe he did not receive a tombstone.
In 1998, a metal marker was placed at the foot of his wife's tombstone, by his GG Grandson Derrick K. Babbs of Paxton, Illinois.
