Businessman, Professional Football Team Owner. The son of oil tycoon H.L. Hunt, he was a co-founder of the American Football League in 1960 after a failed attempt at getting a National Football League expansion franchise in 1959. His first team, the Dallas Texans, suffered from lackluster attendance at their games, and in 1963 the team was moved to Kansas City, changing their name to the Kansas City Chiefs. He is credited for coining the term "Super Bowl" in 1969 as a name for what was then known as the "AFL-NFL Championship". In 1970 the AFL merged with the NFL, forming the present League. In 1972 he became the first person from the American Football League to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 1984. The trophy presented to each year's championship team of the American Football Conference bears his name. He was also a charter investor in Major League Soccer, originally owning two Major League Soccer teams, the Columbus Crew and the Kansas City Wizards. In 2003 he purchased the team FC Dallas and in 2006 sold his ownership of the Kansas City Wizards. He was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 1992 for his work in promoting soccer in the United States.
