Martin A. Powell of Waukesha died in an automobile accident along with his wife Lorraine Powell in Fond du Lac County. Age 78.

Martin was born a son of Myron and Mary (nee Robinson) Powell. He attended Chilton High School and entered the U.S. Navy at age 17 in Milwaukee. He first enlisted as an apprentice seaman Dec. 30, 1942.

On Dec. 30, 1949, he married Lorraine Jacobson in Norwich, Conn. He worked his way from bottom up through the ranks and qualified for special duties such as instructor and chief torpedo man's mate (submarine service). His highest achievement was chief petty officer and he received medals and ribbons of the American Area Campaign, World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Asian-Pacific Area Campaign. He retired from active duty in April 1965. He then enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve until his retirement in 1972. He proudly made a career of serving his country.

Martin's work ethic took him to several jobs. He most recently worked for KL Trust, which was Senator Kohl's Jefferson Building in Milwaukee. His title was building maintenance supervisor. Martin was a lifetime member of the Elk's Club, the Fleet Reserve and the U.S. Submarine Veterans.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Lucille Balza, Agnes Martzahl, Ila Brehmer and Anna Ahrens; and two brothers, Robert and William Powell.

Martin will be sadly missed by his children, Linda (the Rev. James) Lewis of Arcadia, Ind., Kristi (Peter) Powell-Grenfell of New York and Wendy (Gregory) Galbraith of Aniwa, and six grandchildren, Evan, Jessica, Nora Lorraine, Kerry, Sara and David Powell. He is also survived by his brothers, Herbert (Marie) Powell and Eugene (Muriel) Powell, both of Kaukauna, and his sisters-in-law, Doris Powell of Menomonee Falls and Viola Powell of Kaukauna. He is further survived by his brother-in-law, Leroy Balza of Kaukauna.
