I could not locate a William Bollin in the 1850 census. The only family found in Dubois County in 1850 is the Alexander and Susannah (Wood) Bolin family, located in Patoka Township. William Bolin is listed at findagrave #48652779. Whether or not William Bollin, born 1848-1850 is their son, or somehow related to Alexander and Susannah, is unknown.
It is clear that William spent his entire life in care, first in private homes whereby people were paid by the county or state to care for the sick and injured, or feeble (handicapped), and later in institutions like the Dubois County Poor House.
In the 1860 census he is recorded as William Bolin, age 10 years, “insane” and in the home of the John Collins family who are in Ferdinand, Dubois County. In the 1870 federal census he is recorded as Wm R. Bolen and located in Bainbridge Township, counted in the home of John Miller, age 20 years and recorded as “idiotic.” He is recorded in the 1880 census as William Bolin, age 30 years, born Indiana, cannot read or write, and living in Dubois County Poor House in Bainbridge Township; 1900 census as William Bollin, born Feb 1848 Indiana, age 52 years, unmarried.
I’m sure he’s in a better place after what must have been an extremely difficult life here on Earth.
