Our beloved mother, Bonnie Marie (Duty) Matthews, 67, of St Petersburg, FL went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 12, 2016 at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, VA. She was preceded in death by her parents Charles Pleasant Duty of Shreveport, LA and Norma Jean (Creighton) Duty of Grand Cayman, BWI. She is survived by her daughter Karrie Marshall and grandchildren Katelin, Austin and Jarred Marshall; daughter Kristi Clark, son-in-law Greg Clark, and grandchildren Gabrielle and Kristian Clark; and daughter Connie Kegley, son-in-law Bill Kegley, and grandchildren Lillian and Liam Kegley. Bonnie was the 3rd of 6 siblings and is survived by Charles “Sonny” Duty, Shirley Lowe, David Duty, Norma Jean Williams, and Paul Duty. She was born in Leesville, LA and lived in Shreveport, LA along with Grand Cayman, BWI, Pinellas County and Citrus County, FL as well as Stafford, VA. She graduated from Dixie Hollins High School and Tomlinson Educational Center for Nursing as a LPN. She worked for over 40 years as a Nurse and Medical Coding Specialist. She retired due to health issues at 65 from Bon Secours Maria Manor long term care facility in St Petersburg, FL where she had worked for over 12 years as a Charge Nurse. She always enjoyed working with and had a special touch for her dementia patients.
Bonnie was a born again Christian and had accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior when she was a teenager attending Grace Baptist Church in Pinellas Park, FL. When she passed she was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Clearwater, FL. She was also an original charter member of Liberty Baptist Church in St Petersburg, FL where she helped to start and expand the church with her sister and brother-in-law Shirley and Dr JL Lowe over 46 years ago. While attending at Liberty, she traveled and participated in many mission trips to Africa, China, Hong Kong, Costa Rica and the Philippines where she provided medical assistance to those in need and told them how much Jesus loves them.
Bonnie had a love of riding and owning horses, especially with her childhood girlfriend Jimmie Lawrence in Brooksville, FL or at the cabin in up in the woods in TN. She had a very independent spirit and enjoyed going to the movies or taking spontaneous trips out of town to visit her brother and sister-in-law Paul and Kathy Duty in Plant City, FL or to the country to see her long time friends Susanne and Rick Sims in Lake Panasoffkee, FL. Frequently over the years she would fly to her favorite place Grand Cayman, BWI to visit family and to relax on the beautiful beaches near her childhood home. She loved turtle stew, Cuban sandwiches and cassava cake the way her mother made it and always made sure to get enough meat patties at her cousin’s little convenient store in Georgetown, Grand Cayman. She made many memories with immediate and extended family, long time friends and coworkers that she would relive often; joking and laughing about the antics and silly situations that she would find them and her in. She had a quick wit and good sense of humor; bringing joy to everyone she met.
Bonnie’s greatest love was for her daughters and grandchildren. Her face would light up every time she saw one of them. She was actively involved in each of their lives; she was always there and helped whenever she was needed. She sacrificed and worked to provide a loving home, a good education, and opportunities for them to have the best life possible. Her daughters and grandchildren loved being with her and are grateful for all she has done for them. But her greatest passion was telling others about Jesus and what He did for her, so that they could experience the joy of knowing Jesus Christ and have eternal life.
Bonnie is now home with her heavenly Father and earthly parents. She will be forever loved and in our hearts until we are together again for eternity.
