OBITUARY - Wapello Republican, Wapello, Iowa, Thursday, September 29, 1988:

DOUGLAS STAATS
Douglas Laverne Staats, age 27, of Oakville, Iowa died Friday morning, September 23, 1988 at the scene of a motorcycle-truck accident on Hwy. 99 south of Oakville. Doug was on his way to school at Southeastern Community College at West Burlington where he was preparing to be a medical assistant. Mr. Staats had taught grades 7-12, Science, Math and Computer for two years at the North Hills Christian School at Port Huron, Michigan, followed by one year similarly at the North County Christian School of Ferguson, Missouri before coming back home to pursue a medical career. He was a graduate of Wapello High School class of 1979 and the Mid-America Nazarene College of Olathe, Kansas in 1984. He has completed an EMT course in 1988. Doug Staats was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, Wapello, Iowa and past president and active in the Nazarene Youth International. Douglas Staats was born July 27, 1961 at Burlington, Iowa, the son of Troy and Joyce Swanson Staats. He married Virginia "Ginny" Brickles September 14, 1985 at Fredonia, Iowa. He is survived by his wife Ginny, his parents, Troy and Joyce Staats, his grandfather, Alvie Tisor, all of Oakville, Iowa; one brother, Lee, McAllen, Texas; and one sister, Robin, Burlington, Iowa. Funeral services for Doug Staats was held Monday, September 26, 1988 at 11:00 a.m. at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home, Wapello, Iowa with Pastor Dan Wiebesiek officiating. Faith Williams provided the organ music. Casket bearers included Terry Hudson, Jerry Larimer, Kirk Swanson, Lane Walker, John Mitchell and Sean Allen. Flower attendants were Kathy Swanson and Cindy Grim. Burial was in the Edwards Cemetery, Oakville. The family met friends Sunday evening at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home, Wapello. A Memorial Fund has been established for the benefit of NYI (Nazarene Youth International).
